The Dow Chemical Company was recently honored for its 25 year global partnership with Habitat for Humanity at the 2008 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project (JRCWP) held on the U.S. Gulf Coast in May.

During the 5-day event, the Dow team, along with several customers and hundreds of volunteers, helped to construct and rehabilitate more than 250 houses at building sites along the Gulf Coast in support of ongoing hurricane recovery efforts. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed or damaged more than half-a-million houses along the Gulf Coast in 2005.

Dow was recognized at a VIP reception held in New Orleans, where key donors of Habitat gathered with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, world renown musician Harry Connick, Jr. and others to celebrate the couple’s 25th year of partnership with Habitat and with Dow.

“We are extremely proud to support President Carter and Rosalynn in this 25th year of their unique commitment to Habitat for Humanity,” said Nawzer Parakh, vice president of Operations and St. Charles Operations site leader in Hahnville, who spoke on behalf of Dow at the reception. “This partnership clearly demonstrates Dow's commitment to our 2015 Sustainability Goals and our willingness to help solve some of the world's most pressing challenges, one of these being the need for adequate, affordable housing.”

The recognition continued with a short video highlighting the 25 year Dow-Habitat-Carter relationship and the tireless effort of Dow employees supporting this partnership the past three decades. Dow has participated in numerous international Carter work projects, including those in the Phillipines, Mexico, Hungary, Korea, South African and India.

Dow’s Gold Level sponsorship of this year’s event, contributed a unique donation of financial and employee volunteer support, as well as product contributions, including energy efficient technologies that will mean lower utility bills for the new home owners. Products donated include STYROFOAM™ Insulation , WEATHERMATE™ Housewraps and SAFETOUCH™ Fiberglass-Free Insulation, which, when combined, will reduce natural gas used for heating by more than 23 percent and decrease electricity costs by some 30 percent.

The JCWP is an annual internationally-recognized event in which the former U.S. president and his wife join Habitat volunteers in building homes. President Carter has been personally involved in the construction of homes around the globe, providing shelter to more than 10,000 people.
