Dow, Arnold Center Recycling Effort To Bring New Jobs to Midland

Midland, MI - July 01, 2008

The Dow Chemical Company and Arnold Center Inc. today announced that they will collaborate to recycle more than one million pounds of paper annually collected from Dow sites in mid-Michigan. The program, dubbed WeCycle, is expected to create the equivalent of 15 to 20 jobs at the Arnold Center.

“Dow people share a deep commitment to our community and the environment, and this program impacts both,” says Jim Hummel, Human Resources director, Dow Michigan Operations, who also serves as the WeCycle Project Team Leader. “We’ve had many recycling programs in the past, but we expect to triple or quadruple the amount we’re recycling because we’re making it easier for employees.”

Recycling is a key component of Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals. In keeping with these goals, the company is seeking to eliminate paper incineration and reduce the total amount of refuse that goes to the landfill by 30 percent.

“This paper recycling program is the beginning of something much bigger,” says Mike Shea, President, Arnold Center, Inc. “We expect to expand the program, both in terms of what is actually recycled and the number of jobs associated with the program as we attract other businesses in the community.”

Items included in the recycling project include sticky notes, brochures, business cards, colored and white paper, envelopes, magazines, file folders, newspapers, papers with clips, rubber bands and/or staples, ring and spiral binders with paper inside, telephone books, fax paper, and catalogs. The Arnold Center has the capability to sort these items, which will dramatically increase what is recycled.
