Dow Announces Price Increase for Polycarbonate, Polycarbonate Compounds and Polycarbonate Blends in North and Latin America

Houston, TX - April 08, 2009

Sharply declining prices in conjunction with increases in the cost of key raw materials and energy which have driven production costs higher for polycarbonate, polycarbonate compounds and polycarbonate blends are resulting in significant margin pressure on suppliers. Based on these industry conditions, The Dow Chemical Company (“Dow”) today announced a US$0.07/lb. price increase across North and Latin America for all polycarbonates, polycarbonate compounds and polycarbonate blends, effective May 1, 2009, or as contract terms allow.

"Looking at the consistent price decline over the last 6 months in polycarbonate with benzene’s 60% run-up since January 2009 and propylene’s 35% increase year-to-date, it is important and necessary that we take pricing action to restore margins despite the uncertainty and weakness in many of our polycarbonate end-use markets”, said Glenn Wright, Commercial Vice President for Dow's Basic Plastics business in North America.

Dow brands affected by the price increase include CALIBRE™ Polycarbonate Resins and EMERGE™ Advanced Resins.
